Book on underprivileged kids

NEW DELHI: A book titled “Blossoms from the Dust” that tells the story of transformation of underprivileged children was released here this past week by R. K. Pachauri, Chairman of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change.

The big change in the lives of these underprivileged children has been brought about by “Deepalaya Reach India Programme”. The programme was implemented by Deepalaya, a Delhi-based non-government organisation engaged in education of socially and economically backward children.

The programme was carried out in collaboration with six NGOs working in West Delhi with technical and financial support from Reach India of USAID, American Institutes for Research, Juarez and Associates and World Education.

The programme involved identification of out-of-school children from four to 14 years of age and enrolment and coaching of the identified children at the learning centres started by each DRIP partner from two months to one year. It also included mainstreaming of the enrolled children in formal schools, imparting additional coaching in the remedial education centres and building capacities of the staff concerned at the level of each partner organisations.

Launched in October 2004, the programme was aimed at bringing into mainstream a minimum of 3,000 out-of-school children by August 2007 and building the capacities of the six select NGOs.
