Distance education summit opened

NEW DELHI: There is an urgent need for introducing job-oriented training to young boys and girls belonging to the Scheduled Tribes category in the North-East region for solving problems related to unemployment, said Union Tribal Affairs Minister P. R. Kyndiah here on Monday.

Inaugurating the National Open and Distance Education Summit 2007, Mr. Kyndiah said: “There are more than eight crore Scheduled Tribes in different States and Union Territories and most of them live below the poverty line.”

Vice-chancellors from across the country attended the summit.

The gathering unanimously resolved to introduce job-oriented and employment-centric programmes in all districts of the country through select schools and colleges.
