For impersonating as a Delhi Police constable, duping a person of thousands

“Cheated a woman on the pretext of getting her a job in a security agency”

“Cheated about half-a-dozen people, duping them of thousands of rupees”

NEW DELHI: A young man who allegedly cheated people impersonating as a Delhi Police constable has been arrested by the North Delhi police.

According to the police, Jawahar Singh recently lodged a complaint alleging that he had been cheated of Rs.30,000 by a person posing as a constable. About a month ago he was going on his motorcycle when a man in police uniform stopped him for a lift at a Wazirpur traffic signal. He agreed to drop the constable, who identified himself as Rakesh Kumar, at his destination. On the way, the constable offered to arrange for him a vehicle on auction by the Ashok Vihar police.

Lured by the offer, Jawahar contacted the person, following which he showed him some vehicles kept at the Ashok Vihar police station. Jawahar chose a Tata Indica car and the deal was struck for Rs.30,000. The “constable” then asked him to submit documents like identity proof for registration of the vehicle. On November 28, Jawahar and his colleague went to the police station, from where the cheat took them to the Kotwali police station. He made them wait outside, returned after a while, and claimed that the documents were being processed but they would have to pay the amount first.

The “constable” took the money and vanished from the scene through another gate of the premises.

Based on the description of the culprit provided by Jawahar, the police zeroed in on Ashwani Sisodiya who was previously arrested by the Mayapuri police. The complainant identified him from his photograph kept in the police records, following which the accused was picked up for interrogation.

Ashwani allegedly confessed to having cheated Jawahar. He told the police that after completing his schooling he set up a school in his village.

However, he had to close it due to financial constrains. In 2003, he shifted to Delhi and worked in a socks manufacturing unit at Wazirpur for about six months. He then joined a private security agency. While working as a security guard he developed a fascination for police uniforms. He got a uniform stitched and told his neighbours that he had been inducted into the Delhi police as a constable.

He purportedly cheated a woman once on the pretext of getting her a job in a security agency, but was arrested by the Mangolpuri police. He then devised the modus operandi of cheating people by offering them vehicles being auctioned by the police.

Ashwani allegedly cheated about half-a-dozen people this way and made off with thousands of rupees. The police have seized a khaki uniform from his house.
