New method to chlorinate drinking water stalled

TAMBARAM: The elected council of Tambaram Municipality has stalled a proposal to introduce tablets to chlorinate drinking water supplied to residents of the local body.

During a routine meeting on Monday, the councillors were informed that at present, bleaching powder was added to drinking water in overhead tanks and then supplied to residents.

In many urban local bodies adjoining Chennai, tablets were added to the water and this was better than the conventional method of using bleaching powder as it was easier, safer to use and its effect remained longer.

The requirement of tablets was 750 kg at present and it would cost Rs. 5 lakh.

DMK councillor from Ward No. 24 Kalaiselvi Jothikumar opposed the move and sought an explanation from officials on whether the method of chlorinating using tablets was sanctioned by the State government. “Have water samples chlorinated using tablets been tested in government laboratories?” she asked. Even if the new method was in vogue, it had to be tested before the Municipality formally went ahead with the scheme, Ms. Kalaiselvi said. Similarly, a proposal to launch computerised attendance system for municipal staff using biometric finger print method was also deferred. It was proposed to install computers, thumb impression scanners and Internet connectivity at a cost of nearly Rs. 5 lakh as part of the scheme.
