In his message, Mr. Barnala said “Let the dawn of the New Year be an era of all round development in the state and the nation. On this happy occasion, let us resolve to build a strong, peaceful and united India, and rededicate ourselves to work for its progress and prosperity.”

Eventful year

Mr. Karunanidhi described 2007 as an eventful year for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government, as it provided a strong base for the implementation of several welfare and development schemes that are benefiting the needy.

The Chief Minister said that since May 2006 his Government had been implementing various welfare and developmental schemes without levying fresh taxes, as it pursued the path of rationalist leader Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and party founder C.N. Annadurai.

All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary and former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa hoped the New Year would create a conducive situation for taking Tamil Nadu once again on the growth path.

Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G.K. Vasan said, “People should strive hard for the growth of the nation, and make India a powerhouse.”

He also said that the State and Central Governments should work together for the implementation of various welfare schemes.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy urged the people to work with patriotic fervour to bring an end to caste and religious divisions.

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko said the New Year should be free of communal and caste clashes.
