Anurag Srivastava shines in India’s victory

HYDERABAD: A good knock by Anurag Srivastava (97, 92 balls, 6x4) helped India score a convincing 162-run win over Sri Lanka in the first round of the round-robin league match of the inaugural Lawyers World Cup cricket championship at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium (Uppal) here on Monday.

Anurag and Rajesh Singh (60, 64 balls, 3x4) helped India score 242 for seven in 35 overs and in reply Sri Lanka was bundled out for 80 with G.S. Mishra (four for 30) being the main wicket-taker.

The scores: India 242 for seven (Anurag Srivastava 97, Rajesh Singh 60) bt Sri Lanka 80 (G.S. Mishra four for 30).

England 136 for nine (T. Flaherty four for 30) lost to Australia 138 for five (K. Prince 39).

West Indies 181 for nine lost to Pakistan 184 for six (Tariq Maqbool 52 n.o., Jamil Sukhera 42).

Shaibaaz shines

A good all-round show by Shaibaaz Tumbi, who struck 56 and then claimed four for 23, helped St. Peter’s High School record a comfortable, 49-run win over Raju’s Cricket Club in the Gold Drop inter-schools cricket tournamentat Shivrampally near here.

The scores: G.S. Vidyaniketan 148 for three in 20 overs (M.N. Srikanth 50, Chaitanya 62) lost to Kendriya Vidyalaya, NPA, 149 for seven (Akheel 47).

Mahesh Vidya Bhavan 131 for eight in 20 overs bt St. John’s 123 for eight.

St. Peter’s HS CC 162 for four (Shaibaaz Tumbi 56) bt Raju’s CC 113 (Abhinav 40, Shaibaaz Tumbi four for 23).

Sankeerth to lead

N. Sankeerth of MJCET will lead Osmania University in the South Zone inter-university basketball championship to be held in Bharatidasan University (Tiruchirappalli) from January 2.

Tennis Academy

GVK Tennis Academy, a non-profitable venture, has been set up at Jubilee Hills here to take care of both beginners and senior players. This is part of the efforts of GVK Group, which was the first to sponsor Sania Mirza even before she became a celebrity. The Academy will be focussing on specialised coaching for children especially in bio-mechanics, footwork, court craft and physical fitness. Naresh sparkles

At Vijayawada, Naresh (six for 20) helped Blue Stars register a 10-wicket victory over Ramesh XI in the Krishna District Cricket Association ‘B’ division league for Devineni Venkataramana-Praneetha Memorial Trophy on Monday.

The scores: Ramesh XI 80 in 21.2 overs (Naresh six for 20) lost to Blue Stars 82 for no loss in 10 overs.
