Prisoner, undertrial escape

Thiruvananthapuram: A prisoner and an undertrial escaped from the premises of Central Prison, Poojappura, after attacking a policeman on Monday night. They were being brought to the prison after they were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ernakulam.

The incident took place at 8.45 p.m. near the Female Block situated a couple of yards from the entrance of the jail complex. Police sources said the prisoner, Sunil Kumar, and the undertrial, Biju alias Karthik, attacked the policeman while the latter was paying the fare for the autorickshaw which brought them to jail from the Thampanoor bus station. They were reportedly brought from Ernakulam in a KSRTC bus.

The jail authorities were immediately alerted. Of the two, one was caught near a railway gate. But, he escaped after biting the person who tried to nab him. Sniffer dogs have been pressed into service.

Sunil Kumar, 26, is serving one-and-half year’s rigorous imprisonment under Section 379 of the IPC and has been in jail since August 6, 2007. He is a resident of Valikonathveedu, Aryamoodu in Nedumangad.

Biju, 26, charged under Section 34 and 379 of the IPC, has been in the central prison since September 19, 2007. He is a resident of Kunnumpurathu bungalow, Kuzhivila, Thumba.
