Patil to visit Orissa tomorrow

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil will visit Orissa on Wednesday to make a spot assessment of violence against Christians.

Mr. Patil made this announcement to the Archbishop of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, Raphael Cheenath, who met him on Monday seeking Central intervention.

The Archbishop was leading a delegation of church leaders which conveyed its dismay at the delay in providing protection to Christians in the State. The Minister, according to members of the delegation, assured them that the Union Government would provide adequate compensation to those who suffered loss to both life and property. Gladys Staines — wife of the Australian missionary Graham Staines, who, along with their two sons, was burnt to death in Orissa in 1999 — also wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressing anguish at the recent violence in the State.
