NEW DELHI: New Year’s Eve celebrations started on a chilling note in the Capital on Monday with the prevailing cold wave conditions offering little relief to the revellers. Yet there was no stopping them all through the evening and until late at night, especially in and around the wide vistas of Connaught Place. While the minimum temperature in the city stood at 4.7 degrees Celsius, the maximum temperature recorded was 20.8 degrees Celsius. However, despite the low temperatures, no major fog-related delays were reported at the airport or the railway stations with flights and trains proceeding more or less on schedule. According to the Meteorological Department, Monday’s minimum temperature, which was 2 degrees below normal, recorded a marginal increase over Sunday’s minimum of 4.3 degrees Celsius. The forecast for the first day of the New Year reads much worse with the weatherman predicting a minimum temperature of 3 degrees Celsius on Tuesday with a mainly clear sky and mist in the morning. Explaining the reasons for the cold wave conditions prevailing in Delhi, a Meteorological Department official said: “The main reason are the north-westerly winds blowing from the hills, especially Jammu and Kashmir, towards the Capital.” “These winds are likely to remain all of the winter season till a new system or formation develops. It is likely to remain extremely cold at least for the coming two or three days of the New Year,” he added.
