HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday announced the Government’s decision to set up a teaching and general hospital at Erragadda and add a new block to the Niloufer Hospital. Speaking to presspersons after visiting the Niloufer Hospital around noon, Dr. Reddy said the new 750-bedded teaching hospital would come up on a 50-acre site on the Chest Hospital campus at Erragadda. Stating that there was tremendous growth of residential and commercial activity towards Kukatpally side, he said there was no government hospital nearby for these areas and the new full-fledged facility, when completed, would cater to the medical needs of the residents. The Chief Minister reviewed the functioning of Niloufer Hospital and said a new block with 250-bed strength would come up within a year. The children’s hospital presently had 500 beds, but was taking care of more than 750 inpatients on any given day. “We have decided to add 250 beds and the same will come up in a new block with latest infrastructure,” he said. Dr. Reddy noted that Niloufer Hospital was handling more patients than it actually was equipped to. “On an average nearly two patients per bed are being taken care of and there is a need to find a solution to this,” he said observing that children who were critically ill and could not be treated by private hospitals were getting admitted here. Making a direct reference to the recent controversy in which junior doctors were manhandled, he said: “Occasionally, this famous hospital gets a bad name with instances of misbehaviour by attendants of patients.” The conjoined twins Vani and Veena, who were awaiting a surgery at Niloufer Hospital, would be sent to Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai in a week, he added. Dr Reddy visited the emergency units at the hospital and interacted with the attendants and the staff. Health Minister G. Aruna Kumari, Energy Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir, Secunderabad M.P. Anjan Kumar Yadav, Greater Hyderabad Congress Committee president D. Nagender and Hyderabad Collector R. Chandravadan accompanied the Chief Minister.
