Tanuja in a new role

Yesteryears’ Hindi film actor Tanuja can be seen in a new avatar these days in Yash Patnaik’s serial ‘Babbanbhai vs. Bimlatai’ on the newly launched Hindi entertainment channel 9X.

Tanuja, who started her film career with her older sister Nutan in the movie ‘Hamari Beti’ way back in the 1950s, accepted the television assignment as she liked the concept. “When I heard about the character I was to play, I thought what I can do with this character that imparts a social message in a funny way. I was happy that I would be doing something to make people laugh. Besides the interesting role, the producers agreed to all my terms and conditions. What’s more, it’s a weekly which suits me fine.”

Stating that she had received a number of offers in soap operas, Tanuja says they were all about daily squabbles between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law that have been shown so many times on television.

“I cannot see myself doing these serials that go on and on,” added the actress.

Speaking about her fictitious character, Tanuja says Bimalabai is a social worker who helps children and youngsters staying in bastis.
