Kannada books to be given to border area schools

DAVANGERE: Over one lakh Kannada books would be distributed to 110 schools on the border areas of the State and Kannada schools in other states this year, chairman of the Kannada Book Authority Siddaramaiah has said.

He also stated that books would be distributed to 50 schools in Kasargod and 61 schools in Bidar district.

Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, he said Rs. 90 lakh worth Kannada books had been purchased, of which books worth Rs. 43 lakh had already been distributed. Mr. Siddaramaiah said a definite book policy would be formulated by February and that a committee, set up to conduct a comprehensive study on the issue, had completed most of its work.

The proposed policy would then be placed for public debate and if necessary, minor alterations would be made.

Committee composition

The committee comprises educationists, subject experts, noted publishers and senior library officers. The Government had reduced annual grants given to the Kannada Book Authority from Rs. 1 crore to Rs. 23 lakh, to which the book authority had responded by seeking Rs. 1.50 crore. Kannada organisations working outside the State, particularly in Mumbai and Chennai would soon be given Kannada books, he said.

Exhibition

A Kannada book exhibition would be held here as part of the Davangere Zilla Utsava in which as many as 86 stalls would be erected at the Government High School grounds.

Discounts

Over 68 book publishers would take part in the exhibition and a discount of between 10 and 20 per cent would be offered, he said.
