Programme held on domestic violence against women

PUDUCHERRY: An awareness programme on Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 was conducted by Holistic approach for People’s Empowerment (HOPE), a Puducherry-based NGO.

S. Kamalini, Chairperson of the Puducherry Women’s Commission, who released a poster on the Act, said that the Act would go a long way in providing relief to women .

A release said that a resolution was adopted at the workshop urging the government to implement the Act immediately and also frame rules and appoint protection officers service providers and counsellors.

A. Mary Victoria, administrator, HOPE, said that even after 14 months of the Centre issuing a notification to bring the Act into force, it has not been implemented in Puducherry.

A street play on the salient features of the Act was also performed .
