Mankotia resigns

Staff Correspondent

SHIMLA: The Bahujan Samaj Party convenor for Himachal Pradesh, Major Vijay Singh Mankotia, has resigned accepting moral responsibility for the drubbing received by his party in the recent State Assembly elections.

Announcing this in Dharamsala from where he unsuccessfully contested the election, he said he has full

faith in the leadership of party president Mayawati and would continue to work for the party. The BSP could win just one seat in Kangra and was runner-up in other two constituencies out of a total of 68. But it had taken a big chunk of votes (7.4 per cent) all over the State and the Congress defeat is also attributed to its sudden rise. The Congress with a loss of just 2 per cent of votes has lost 19 seats this time. The BJP has also suffered in some of the constituencies due to the BSP presence. The BSP convenor reiterated his charges of corruption against the outgoing Virbhadra Singh Government and said the latter had taken the State to financial bankruptcy and made the State morally and spiritually defunct.
