Had demanded 10 lakh to give favourable report Took Rs.2.5 lakh as first instalment, says CBI NEW DELHI: Three officials of the Central Excise Department were arrested on Tuesday by the Central Bureau of Investigation for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.2.5 lakh from an industrialist to give him a favourable report on duty evasion. According to the CBI, Excise Inspector Hari Chand and Superintendent Sanjay Kumar Singh were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of the CBI at their office in Laxmi Nagar. At their instance, the CBI arrested Assistant Commissioner Subhash Narain following revelation that he too had a share in the bribe money. The accused had demanded a bribe of Rs.10 lakh and had accepted Rs.2.5 lakh as the first instalment, the CBI said. Earlier, on December 19, the Anti-Evasion Cell of the Central Excise Department had conducted a raid at the factory of the industrialist on suspicion that the industrialist was evading excise duty. The accused had then demanded Rs.10 lakh from him to give a favourable report. The industrialist subsequently lodged a written complaint against the accused with the ACB. Further investigations are on.
