dated January 2, 1958: Shortage of rice

Mr. A. P. Jain, India’s Food Minister, told a press conference in Patna on December 31 that “rice continued to be in short supply and all attempts of the Centre to get more rice from abroad had failed to fructify.” He said the people, therefore, should not generally expect any rice from the Centre. Some of the State governments, he added, had already taken action to ban big parties, but much more depended on the public to conserve as much food as possible and to avoid shortage.
