Voters ignore boycott call in Assam

Special Correspondent

Guwahati: More than 70 per cent votes were cast in the first phase of panchayat polls held in seven upper Assam districts on Monday. Voters defied the call for poll boycott and Assam bandh issued by the Janagosthiya Aikyamancha — the coordination committee of the some communities demanding Scheduled Tribe status.

State Election Commissioner C.K. Sharma told The Hindu that the polling passed off peacefully and there was no report of any untoward incident during polling hours.
