BHUBANESWAR: People across the State celebrated the beginning of the New Year with different styles with no major violence reported from any part on Tuesday. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and his Cabinet colleagues visited Jagannath Temple in Puri to seek blessings of Lord on the first day of 2008. When they reached the holy town in the morning, it was already packed with devotees.With Cabinet expansion on the cards, several senior legislators and politicians thronged the Chief Minister’s residence to wish him on the occasion of New Year. Several bureaucrats were also seen presenting flower bouquets to Mr. Patnaik. Secretariat too immersed in the celebration of New Year with most staff extending their wishes while meeting their colleagues. Ministers’ chambers were crowded by their supporters. Berhampur Staff Reporter adds: the city welcomed the New Year with special programs at the Ganjam Festival. A large number of people gathered at the open air auditorium to enjoy the show and welcome New Year. The evening started with folk dances from West Bengal, Assam, Manipur and Punjab. The gracious movements of Bihu were followed by powerful beats of Bhangra. Ghantathala, folk dance of Ganjam, was also part of the show. Oriya cine stars, George Tiadi, Debu Brahma, Jiban Panda came out on stage to perform pieces from their films. Noted theatre artiste Raju Padhi and Bandana Mohapatra made the audience laugh with their comedy show.
