CUTTACK: A new security system would be in place inside SCB Medical College and Hospital here in the New Year. The security measure here had put the premier referral hospital of the State in poor light over these years with cases like baby swapping, missing newborns and attack on doctors. But the state Swasthya Vikash Committee (SVC), a monitoring body of government hospitals has decided to tighten the security of the Cuttack hospital. As part of the measure, the hospital has requisitioned the services of ex-servicemen to be deployed to avoid any untoward incident. “At least 60 ex-army men have been requisitioned from a private security agency who are already deployed inside the hospital”, informed hospital superintendent Trilochan Sahu adding that the strength of the guards would be increased soon. We are also going to take the help of the local police that is going to have some more tooth with the introduction of commissionerate system from January 1, he added. The hospital was always witnessing law and order situation while the crime here was phenomenally increasing due to ill equipped and insufficient security personnel. The doctors, nurses and other staff members were constantly demanding to upgrade the security as nearly 2000 patients and more than 10,000 attendants turn up to the hospital everyday on an average. Among other security measures that would be in place here soon include installation of closed circuit cameras in some key departments, issuance of I-cards to staff of the hospital and giving passes to only two attendants per patient, Sahu informed. “Almost all the staff of the hospital have been issued I-cards and very soon we are going to issue attendant passes,” he added. “For the time being we are going to install CCTVs in surgery, orthopaedic, medicine, gynaecology, casualty and outdoor departments immediately. Subsequently we would extend this facility to remaining departments,” Sahu said.
