Biffes is back

K.N. Venkatasubba Rao

Bangalore: Suchitra Cinema and Cultural Academy in association with the State Government is set to launch the second edition of the weeklong Benagalooru International Film Festival (Biffes).

Over 125 films from 45 countries will be screened from January 3 to 8. The inaugural screening will be held at the Chowdaiah Memorial Hall on Thursday. Governor Rameshwar Thakur will inaugurate the festival and noted filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan will be the chief guest.

An average of four films, including documentary films, will be screened every day at each of the five venues from Friday.

Considering the overall accommodation available in all the five screening centres — three halls at Vision Cinemas and one each at K.H. Patil Hall and at Suchitra Auditorium — the organisers decided to issue only 1,000 delegate passes. Over 500 passes have already been issued to film societies, the Kannada film industry and the public. The special features of the festival include an exclusive DVD section; an Indian panorama section; and book releases that include a biography of the doyen of Kannada cinema M.R. Vittal and a book on cinema featuring articles and reflections compiled by Girish Kasaravalli and edited by noted scholar N. Manu Chakravarthy. There will be a Laser Compact Disc (LCD) exhibition containing clippings of all award-winning Kannada films since 1954. There will also be a three-day course in filmmaking by Mumbai-based filmmaker and film teacher Arun Khopar from Saturday. This will be followed by a daylong seminar on several aspects of filmmaking and the aesthetics of cinema on January 8.
