Government share in NoRKA ROOTs to go up to 51.3% Work on capital road project to begin soon
Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan briefed the media on Cabinet decisions. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Wednesday constituted a sub-committee to hold discussions with the managements of self-financing professional colleges on admission and fee norms. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told the media after the weekly Cabinet meeting that Education Minister M.A. Baby would head the committee. Ministers P.K. Sreemathy, Benoy Viswom, Mathew T. Thomas, Mons Joseph, G. Sudhakaran and N.K. Premachandran would be members of the committee. The Chief Minister said the Cabinet had decided to cancel the order issued in 2002 introducing a contributory pension scheme for new recruits to government service. (With this, all employees would be eligible for government pension). Mr. Achuthanandan said a company on the lines of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation would be formed for running the metro rail proposed for Kochi. The Delhi corporation would be in charge of implementing the Rs.3,000-crore project. The State government would contribute Rs.450 crore for investment in the new company. The Central government too would be providing an appropriate share. He said the government share in NoRKA ROOTS would be increased from 26 per cent to 51.3 per cent. He said that Punj Lloyd would restart the work on the Thiruvananthapuram City Roads Improvement Project shortly on the basis of an understanding reached in discussions with the government. The company had agreed to drop its demand for Rs.105 crore as compensation for the delay in executing the project. Any additional payments would be decided through arbitration. The project taken up in 2004 by the previous government was to be completed in 2004. However, it could not be completed on account of delays in land acquisition. Now, 90 per cent of the land required for the project had been acquired. With the completion of the project, bottlenecks in city traffic would be removed. Transport Commissioner Ramesh Chandrabhanu would be appointed as Ports Director. Additional Commissioner Ananthakrishnan would be given charge of the Commissioner. IAS Officer T. Balakrishanan would be appointed as Managing Director of Thiruvananthapuram Airport Development Authority.
