Celebrating human rights

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Amnesty International India is organising a weeklong festival at Siri Fort Auditorium II here beginning January 13.

In keeping with Amnesty International’s long tradition of activism powered by artistes, the festival will showcase solidarity performances by unique artistes, performers, filmmakers, theatre and music directors and other cultural groups from different parts of the country and abroad to strengthen the cause of human rights.

The festival’s main theme will be ‘Voices of Dignity’. Rock band ‘Advaita’ will give live performances. Also on the cards is a photo exhibition curated by photo artist Parthiv Shah and Centre for Media and Communication.

From January 14 to 19 there will also be film screenings to celebrate and defend the voices of people struggling for their lives, land and liberty, and of human rights defenders fighting for the rights of others. These screenings and photo exhibitions will be held around the city including Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi School of Social Work and Amity University.

The special highlight of the festival will be the screening of the movie ‘Khuda Ke Liye’ (‘In The Name of God’) directed by Shoaib Mansoor of Pakistan. Artistes, academicians and journalists will be felicitated with mementos.

Various competitions and events will be held throughout the year and in December the ‘International Week of Justice Festival’ will be celebrated.
