KOCHI: Kudumbasree, the nine-year-old State Poverty Eradication Mission, is gearing up to take advantage of the opportunities that are being offered by a new initiative by the State government to spread the concept of responsible tourism. Responsible tourism uses the traditional social and economic activities of a community as engines of tourism growth. The tourism industry is guided to channelise its growth to benefit the local communities. This new initiative offers new opportunities for the Kudumbasree Mission, which is a stakeholder in spreading responsible tourism. The Kudumbasree units in areas now identified for spreading the concept of responsible tourism will identify and develop micro economic activities that can boost income for women under the units. Information posted on Kudumbasree website says that one of the problems faced by women entrepreneurs is the lack of a market for their products. The Kudumbasree units now have an opportunity to meet the demand from service providers such as hotels and resorts for vegetables, fruits, livestock products and other items. Expert help from the agriculture and veterinary departments can be made available for scientific cultivation of fruits and vegetables and rearing of animals for meeting the supply demands.
