Lecture on Planet Earth today

Pondicherry University professor will deliver it

PUDUCHERRY: As part of the celebrations of the International Year of Planet Earth, Devi Prasad, professor of the School of Ecology of Pondicherry University, will deliver a special lecture at Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School on Thursday.

A press release from the Pondicherry Science Forum (PSF) said the programme was being organised as part of the triennium year of the International Year of Planet Earth – 2008, which has been proclaimed as the UN Year. It would be used to promote the sustainable use of Earth materials and encourages better planning and reducing risks for the world’s inhabitants.

The International Year of Planet Earth, which runs from January 2007 to December 2009, aims to capture people’s imagination with the exciting knowledge we possess about our planet, and to see that knowledge used to make the Earth a safer, healthier and wealthier place for our children and grandchildren.

The celebrations in Puducherry are being organised by the PSF in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology and the National Council for Science and Technology Communication Network (NCSTC-Network).

Arunachalam, director, Department of Science and Technology; P. Jambulingam, PSF president; Father M.S. John Bosco, principal, Petit Seminaire School; and T. Parasuraman, PSF general secretary; will participate in the programme. Later, the children and the audience will take an oath to protect the planet.

The release added that another programme would be held at Saraswathi Kalyana Mandapam, Villianur, on January 5 at 4 p.m., where a lecture will be followed by 400 persons taking out a rally.
