Happy with making people laugh

M. Balaganessin

"Even the richest man on earth is not as popular as an actor," says comedian

Bayilvan Ranganathan

PUDUKOTTAI: For him, to be an actor is a gift, though it was purely accidental in his case. People swarm around him seconds after he comes out after offering prayer at Sri Bhuvaneswari Avadutha Vidhya Peetam in Pudukottai town.

Bayilvan Ranganathan does not repent for not achieving his ambition to become a police officer. He takes everything in a lighter vein. “Even today, when being pressed by my friends, I was under the impression that I was going to visit an ancient temple. But only on reaching the Peetam did I realise that it was an adhistanam and not so ancient. Anyway, I am not disappointed at all,” he says.

What surprises him is the sudden increase in the number of producers in the Tamil film world. 2007 saw the maximum number of new film producers.

He is confident that the comedy track in films undergoes a cyclic process. “What delights an audience at one point of time will not interest him during another period. But over the years, the old style of comedy will get a new lease of life,” he says to a question.

He is extremely happy over his role as a comedian. “It is difficult to make a person laugh.”

Even the richest man on earth is not as popular as an actor.

“When a minister comes, only police officials and security personnel know him; but in my case, as you see here, people of various walks of life and different age-groups shake hands with me, as they instantly recognise me,” he says.

In all humility, he signs autograph for his fans.
