Birth anniversary of Kallanagouda Patil

HAVERI: Citizens of Ranebennur have joined hands to celebrate the birth anniversary of freedom fighter Kallanagouda F. Patil on Friday.

A native of Kolur in Ranebennur taluk, Patil was 35 years old when he joined the freedom struggle. He had to remain underground because of his activities against the British.

He was imprisoned for four years because of his revolutionary activities.

After Independence, Patil served as an officer in the Bombay Secretariat till 1957 and then entered active politics.

He became MLA twice — from Ranebennur constituency in 1957 and Byadgi constituency in 1972. He was a Minister during his second term as MLA.

He also took the initiative of encouraging education to girl child. Founder of Gram Seva Mantap (GSM) at Haveri, Patil was also responsible for setting up of several educational institutions including Rajrajeshwar PU College and Degree College for Girls and a destitute home for girls.

He passed away in 1996 at the age of 91. On the occasion, citizens of Ranebennur have decided to set up a charitable trust to carry out the works which were dearer to him.

The occasion will also mark the taking over of the educational institutions of GSM by the KLE Society, Belgaum.

Former Ministers M.P. Prakash and K.B. Koliwad, former MLA Shivanna Tilawalli, poet Channaveera Kanavi, former Speaker of Legislative Assembly B.G. Banakar and chairman of KLE Society Prabhakar Kore are expected to participate in the function.
