Councillors seek speedy execution of UGD project

Staff Reporter

‘Works are progressing at a snail’s pace’

Trenches dug up for the project not closed

NAMAKKAL: Councillors, cutting across party affiliations, urged the Namakkal Municipal administration to speed up the execution of Under Ground Drainage (UGD) project.

At the municipal council meeting held here on Monday, councillors said that works taken up under the project were progressing at a snail’s pace, which had put people in the town to hardship.

The trenches dug up for the project had not been closed at several parts in the town, posing serious danger to the road users. The councillors expressed displeasure over the slow pace of work and condemned the municipal administration.

Another DMK Councillor Sambandan Natarajan complained that many roads in the town remained badly damaged for long.

He urged the municipality to take up road repairs immediately.

Chairman R. Selvaraj, in his replay, said that road repair works could be taken up only after the completion of UGD project.

AIADMK councillor Komala Bhaskar appealed to the municipality to ensure adequate supply of water to her ward. Another councillor Arumugam (DMK) alleged that the garbage collection in many parts of the town was poor.

The dumping solid waste in the drainage channels affected the wastewater flow.

The municipality should initiate stringent action against people who were dumping garbage in sewers and impose fine on them, he demanded.

Imran, another councillor, wanted the municipality to discuss with the councillors during the general revision of property tax. Commissioner Pongodi Arumaikan and senior officials were present.
