PUDUCHERRY: Chairperson of Puducherry Municipality B. Sridevi has sought police protection following threats allegedly issued by unknown persons. The chairperson told reporters on Wednesday that she had received two anonymous phone calls in the wee hours of Tuesday threatening to “eliminate her if she did not resign.” Ms. Sridevi, who was elected on a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ticket, said she received the first call at around 1.30 a.m while she was watching New Year programmes on television. The second call came at around 3 a.m, she said adding that the caller threatened to “eliminate her of she did not heed to the demand for her resignation.” She alleged that “a section of councillors belonging to her own party” was behind the move to topple her. Karunanidhi briefedThe Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief, M. Karunanidhi, had been appraised of the issue, she said. Rules out resignationMs. Sridevi also ruled out her resignation owing to such threats.Recalling the incident on Monday in which a group of men barged into her office and ransacked the cabin, Ms. Sridevi said, “I will not be cowed down by such acts.” ComplaintPolice sources said they have received a complaint seeking action against a party leader for instigating the councillors against Ms. Sridevi. The department was considering her request for protection, the sources added.
