“I’ am not for serving biscuits at noon meal centres”
Special Correspondent
"CUDDALORE: Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna has said that it is “not desirable” to serve biscuits at noon meal centres in lieu of cooked food.
Ms. Poongothai Aladi Aruna, who was here to attend an official function on Wednesday, made this observation when reporters drew her attention to a proposal of some MPs that biscuits could be served in the place of cooked food at the noon meal centres.
The Minister said that Tamil Nadu’s noon meal scheme was an exemplary one. It ensured supply of nutritious food rich in protein to children.
Fresh vegetables and three eggs a week would definitely improve the health condition of the children.
As a doctor, she would not recommend biscuits because it would not be very nutritious and also create caries in the teeth.
Calorific value
Ms. Poongothai Aladi Aruna said the Supreme Court had directed that the noon meal centres should serve food with a calorific value of 350.
But, Tamil Nadu was providing food with a calorific value of 400.
Therefore, she strongly advocated the continuation of the scheme in its present form.
