Proposal to set up SEZs opposed ‘Rail roko’ to be staged on January 27 Chitradurga: The Akhila Karnataka Gadinadu Horata Samiti will hold a State-wide protest and a “rail roko” agitation on January 27 seeking better employment opportunities for Kannadigas. Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, samiti president Vatal Nagraj alleged that owing to non-implementation of several projects and reports, the State had been lagging behind with regard to development. He urged the Union Government to accord classical status to Kannada. He urged all political leaders and Members of Parliament representing the State to pressure the Union Government into meeting them. Referring to the backwardness of north Karnataka and the Hyderabad Karnataka region, he demanded that the Government implement the Dr. Nanjundappa Committee report on removing regional imbalances. With regard to non-implementation of the Sarojini Mahishi Committee report, he said that owing to Government negligence, several Kannadigas were deprived of opportunities in the private sector. He said a large number of multinational companies were coming up in the State, but most of them were denying Kannadigas employment opportunities. Railway infrastructureSpeaking on projects sought to augment railway infrastructure, Mr. Nagaraj accused the Union Government of meting out step-motherly treatment to the State by not sanctioning new railway lines. On the State Government’s proposal to set up Special Economic Zones (SEZs), he said the samiti had been opposing SEZs as it involved purchase of farmlands. President of the Akhila Karnataka Rajkumar Abhimanigala Sangha Sa. Ra. Govind, Dalit leader N. Murthy and the former municipal president Kantaraj were present.
