NAMAKKAL: More than 1,200 school students, self-help group members and drivers took out a rally to create awareness among people on traffic rules here on Wednesday.
Flagged off by Collector G. Sundaramurthi at Namakkal Government Boys Higher Secondary School (South), the rally, organised as a part of Road Safety Week, passed through Mohanur Road, Tiruchi Road and a few other important thoroughfares in the town.
Slogans
Participants carrying placards raised slogans asking people to adhere to traffic rules. They also distributed pamphlets on road safety, and explained the dangers of speeding and overloading to road users.
The importance of wearing helmets while riding motorcycles was also stressed. A large number of deaths in road accidents involving motorcyclists were owing to head injuries, which could have been avoided if the riders had used helmets, participants said.
Regional Transport Officer Chandramohan, Deputy Superintendent of Police Vijayaraghavan and senior officials were present.
