“Build fair price shops with MP, MLA funds”

Special Correspondent

All part-time shops in a district should be kept open on the same day: Minister

TIRUVANNAMALAI: Steps should be taken to obtain funds under the MPs Local Area Development Scheme and the MLAs’ Constituency Development Fund for the construction of buildings for fair price shops in the State, Food Minister E.V. Velu has said.

Presiding over a meeting conducted to review the functioning of the public distribution system in Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore and Villupuram at the Collectorate here on Monday, Mr. Velu said all part-time fair price shops in a district should be kept open on the same days in the week.

Essential commodities

He asked the civil supplies officials to check the essential commodities before they are transported from the godowns to the fair price shops.

He told the regional managers of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) to verify whether the same commodities are sold at the shops. Complaints from the public should be maintained in a separate register and the details of the complaints and the ‘action taken report’ sent to the MLAs and MPs concerned, he said.

After the establishment of control rooms for monitoring the working of fair price shops in Namakkal and Tiruvannamalai districts, complaints against salesmen of fair price shops have come down, Mr. Velu said.

Lorry cleaners and workers in charge of weighing the commodities should not sit on the rice bags when goods are being transported.

TNCSC officials should monitor whether the lorries are plying on the prescribed route while taking goods from the godowns to the fair prices shops.

They should also monitor whether the rice meant for the Antyodaya Anna Yojana reached the beneficiaries. Details such as stocks, weekly holiday and working hours should be painted on the walls of all the fair price shops, he said.

Mr. Velu urged the authorities to scrutinise all the applications for family cards and issue them without delay.

In case any application is rejected, the information should be conveyed to the applicant through a letter, citing the reason for the refusal, he said.

K. Shanmugam, secretary, Department of Food, Cooperation and Consumer Protection, K. Rajaram, Commissioner of Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection, S. Phaneendar Reddy, Managing Director of the TNCSC, Satyabrata Sahoo, Tiruvannamalai Collector, Brajendra Navneeth, Villupuram Collector, Rajendra Ratnoo, Cuddalore Collector and Sankaralingam, Vigilance Officer of the TNCSC, participated in the meeting.
