NEW DELHI: To mark the second anniversary of the police firing on anti-displacement protesters at Kalinga Nagar in Orissa, the Delhi Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist)-New Democracy staged a dharna at Jantar Mantar here on Wednesday. The protest meeting was organised to pay homage to several tribals who lost their lives in the police firing on January 2, 2006, in the coastal State. Among other things, the protesters demanded withdrawal of the Special Economic Zone Act, denial of permission for multi-national corporations and corporate houses to acquire land and cancellation of the Posco project. Demanding immediate repeal of the SEZ Act, speakers said the struggles against forced acquisition throughout the country show that peasants were speaking up against pro-imperialist and pro-rich model of development. These policies had resulted in displacement and devastation of farmers, loot of the country’s natural resources and development of only a handful, said speakers. They also demanded withdrawal of the CPI(M) cadre and the police from Nandigram in West Bengal.
