To be chaired by area MLAs Will comprise ten members each NEW DELHI: In a move ostensibly aimed at placing greater say in the hands of the members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly with regard to power problems in their respective areas, Power Minister A.K. Walia on Wednesday decided to constitute committees on power problems in all the Assembly constituencies. Presiding over a high-level meeting, Dr. Walia said each of these committees would have ten members and would be chaired by the area MLA. The move has been initiated as MLAs across party lines had during a short-term discussion in the recent Assembly session demanded constitution of such committees with their active involvement to overcome difficulties relating to billing and other facets of power. Dr. Walia while paying heed to the demand raised by the MLAs decided to set in motion the process of constitution of such committees which would also include two representatives of the area discoms. The other seven members would be nominated from the local residents’ welfare association, trade organisation and other social organisations. Dr. Walia expressed confidence that these committees would be able to review the billing system apart from looking into serious complaints. The committees would also be asked to expedite infrastructure development. The committee would meet every month to streamline the functioning of the discoms, he added. Calling upon the discoms to avoid unreasonable power cuts which harass consumers, Dr. Walia said the power companies had also been told to SMS on power shedding to all elected representatives in Delhi. He also instructed the discoms to concentrate on infrastructure development, saying it would help in improvement in power supply. The discoms have also been asked to submit a list of transformers which are becoming a cause of frequent power cuts.
