THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Centre has given sanction to the State to import 20 exotic bulls for its cross-breeding programme. Chairman of the Kerala Livestock Development (KLD) Board Ani S. Das told The Hindu here that the sanction letter was sent to the Board by the officials of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries of the Union Agriculture Ministry. Dr. Das said the Board had also received permission to import 200 embryos, 2,000 doses of frozen semen of the exotic bulls. All these would be used for the development of a steady source of bulls for the cross-breeding programmes in the State. He said 10 Holstein Friesian and 10 Jersey bulls would be imported as part of the programme. The Centre has fixed a financial target of Rs.72 lakh for the import and it will bear the entire expenditure under the National Project for Cattle and Buffalo Breeding (NPCBB). International tenders will have to be floated for the import by the KLD Board for the import.
