Thiruvananthapuram: Home and Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said on Wednesday that the police were asked to strengthen security in all tourist destinations in the State. Interacting with the presspersons after inaugurating Road Safety Week in the capital, Mr. Balakrishnan said instructions were given to the Director General of Police in the wake of harassment of a Swedish girl in Fort Kochi during New Year celebrations. Terming the incident as an ‘anti-social act’ and against the culture of Kerala, he said the police would take stern action against the accused, who was arrested. Although the Swedish family preferred not to lodge a complaint, the police had registered a suo motu case based on the statement from a Sub-Inspector. The Kochi City Police Commissioner had been given instructions to take stern action against the culprit. The Minister said the incident would affect the flow of foreign tourists to the State as the incident took place during the peak season. Moreover, the incident took place when Kerala Tourism was being promoted aggressively.
