Judges to inspect games village site

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Justices A.K. Sikri and Rekha Sharma will visit the proposed Commonwealth Games Village site on the Yamuna riverbed near the mammoth new Akshardham temple in East Delhi for an on-the-spot feel of the layout. The Judges expressed their desire to visit the site while hearing a PIL by social activist Vinod Jain seeking a direction to the Centre not to allow development of such projects on the riverbed and floodplain of the Yamuna that hinder groundwater recharge and environment regeneration.

The Judges will visit the site this Friday at 3 p.m. The petitioner and government officials will accompany them.

DDA’s plan

The Judges said they wanted to see for themselves how much of the riverbed and floodplain had been acquired to build the Games Village. The Delhi Development Authority has already informed the High Court that it will build a residential complex of 1,160 flats in the Games Village to accommodate athletes coming to participate in the event in 2010.

The DDA has already submitted the layout plan to the Court.
