For consensus: K. Sankaranarayanan, Governor of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, addressing the gathering at the 131st Mannam Jayanthi celebrations at Perunna on Wednesday. PERUNNA: Governor of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh K. Sankaranarayanan has called for dialogue with all stakeholders before attempting reforms in the education sector. He was speaking at the Mannam Jayanthi celebrations organised by the Nair Service Society (NSS) here one Wednesday. Making it clear that he was only expressing personal opinions, Mr. Sanakaranarayanan said reforms in the education sector were long overdue but such reforms should be implemented by taking all stakeholders into confidence. “We have to look at how people respond to opinions expressed by leaders. That is the essence of democracy,” he said and pointed out that in a democracy “I do not have the right to make a decision as to what you should do, and you do not have the right to tell me what to do. In a democracy we try to arrive at consensus,” he said. The opinions expressed by the Nair Prathinidhi Sammelan on Tuesday on educational issues were of contemporary relevance and the issues raised in the resolutions in general expressed the view that no one should interfere in the Fundamental Rights, Mr. Sankaranarayanan said. He said there was no need for the NSS to review the policies expressed in Tuesday’s resolutions and called upon the leadership to move ahead with their avowed policies. Mr. Sankaranarayanan said the synergy created by the values, leadership quality and the examples set by Mannathu Padmanabhan would help the present leadership to guide the organisation and the community in the path tread by the founding father. NSS general secretary P.K. Naryana Panicker chaired the session and G. Sukumaran Nair, assistant secretary, welcomed the gathering. P.J. Kurian, MP, launched a web portal www.nss.org.in opened by the NSS. K. Suresh Kurup, MP, Maulvi Hafiz Ijaz-ul Kausari, C.F. Thomas, MLA, were among those who spoke on the occasion.
