New timing boards at Chennai central station

Krishna Velupillai

CHENNAI: The Chennai Central Railway Station is sporting three new ‘arrival and departure’ train timing and information display boards of the type one usually sees in airports.

The boards are a new addition to the station, which has been on a drive to enhance both its look and services. Though the three boards — one each to display the information in Tamil, English and Hindi — are being operated on a trial basis, they seem to be a hit with the passengers. Many say they like the way these white on black flipping boards look and also find them more informative and clear than the older electronic boards with the destinations and timings glowing in red.

Placed right in the middle of the waiting room, they are also placed at a perfect height so that one does not need to crane one’s neck out to read the schedule. An official of the station said this was the first time that such a board was being tried out in a railway station in Chennai and possibly in the whole of Tamil Nadu.

The Southern Railway, he added, is constantly striving to deploy the latest technologies to improve the services and the appearance of the station. A technology company from Mumbai is working on the software that is required to work these boards.
