Pongal gift distribution launched in Karur

KARUR: The State Government wanted to ensure that every one below the poverty line should be able to get Pongal gift including a sari and a dhoti free of cost without any hassles. We are also striving to complete the disbursal before January 10, Karur MP K.C. Palanisamy said at Puthambur near here on Tuesday.

Speaking at a function to mark the launch of free sari, dhoti scheme in Karur district, Mr. Palanisamy said that the various welfare schemes aimed at the uplift of the poor and the downtrodden in the State would be carried to the full extent. All the eligible persons would get the benefits, he remarked.

Collector T.N. Venkatesh said that the district administration had made elaborate arrangements to distribute free dhoti and saris to beneficiaries below poverty line in time for Pongal festival through the fair price shops. For the coming Pongal, in Karur Taluk a total of 1,29,225 saris and dhotis would be distributed while in Aravakurichi Taluk 56,579 saris and dhotis, in Krishnarayapuram 33,267 saris and 33,209 dhotis and in Kulithalai a total of 63,322 saris and 58,806 dhotis would be distributed.

On the occasion, a total of 498 beneficiaries were given saris and dhotis. Aravakurichi MLA M.A. Khaleelur Rahman, District Panchayat Chairman Poovai Ramesh Babu, Thanthoni Panchayat Union Chairman Bank Subramanian spoke.
