Farmers confused over restructuring

Thanjavur: The Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam affiliated to CPI has appealed to the State Government to send immediately the flood damage report to Central Government and get relief and financial assistance from the centre.

A resolution to this was adopted at the administrative committee meeting of the Sangam held here on Wednesday.

Briefing presspersons about the resolution adopted at the meeting, Dr. V. Durai Mancikam, state general secretary of the sangam told presspersons, that Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has said that centre will help if the State Government sent its flood damage report. State Government should not delay sending the report, Durai Manickam added.

The sangam also appealed to the State Government to pay Rs.15,000 per acre as compensation for crops damaged in an acre of land due to recent rain in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts.

“Farmers incur an expenditure of Rs.15,000 per acre for paddy cultivation. That amount should be paid as compensation,” Durai Manickam explained.

The sangam demanded payment of Rs.5000 per acre for pulses like black gram, green gram damaged in rain, Rs. 25,000 per acre for Banana and Rs. 10,000 per acre for Tobacco grown in Vedaranyam area.

‘Fund river linking projects’

Central Government should allot fund and prepare an action plan for linking south Indian rivers during the eleventh five year plan period.

In drought affected states, steps should be taken for rain water harvesting and improving water resources like lakes and tanks.

Farmers are confused over the State Government’s decision to restructure agriculture department. They should be informed by the Government about what it intended to do.

It is said that the three-tier system in agriculture department will be made into two tier one.

S. Rajendran, former MLA and Vice-president of the Sangam, T.S. Masilamani, Tiruvarur district secretary, Muthuramalingam, secretary of Sivaganga district, K.P. Kalyanasundaram, Salem district secretary, M.G. Ramachandran, Cuddalore district secretary, Ramamurthy, Villupuram district secretary, G. Singarayar, state administrative committee member, R.P. Ramasamy, president of Tapioca growers association participated in the meeting.
