dated January 3, 1958: Metric system of weights

The new system of metric weights and measures will be introduced in nine major cities of Bombay State from October 1, 1958, it was learnt in Bombay on January 1. This proposal was finalised following a recent conference in Bombay between representatives of the State Government and of the Union Ministry of Industry and Commerce. The Union Government officials made a preliminary study of the manufacturing capacity of approved establishments to ensure uniformity of standards of metric weights. The change-over to the new system is limited to the cities of Bombay, Poona, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Baroda, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Sholapur and Kolhapur in the initial stages for commodities like sugar, salt, vanaspati, ghee, coal, coke, charcoal fuel, wood, iron and steel, cement, biscuits and confectionary, paints, varnishes and washing soaps.
