dated January 3, 1958: Mid-day meals fund

The Mayor’s Mid-day Meals and Clothing Fund, organised for supplementing the efforts of the Corporation in providing mid-day meals and clothing to school children with public contribution, was inaugurated by Mr. T. T. Krishnamachari, Union Finance Minister, in Madras on January 1, at a function got up at Ripon Buildings. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Krishnamachari appealed to the citizens to contribute liberally to the fund and pointed out the necessity for securing voluntary assistance from the public to such causes. Mrs. Tara Cherian, Mayor, explained the pioneering work of the Corporation in the field of supplying mid-day meals to school children and said that they proposed to upgrade the meals both in quality and quantity.
