Attack on CRPF post

It is distressing to read of terrorist attacks and loss of lives day in and day out, the latest being the attack on a CRPF centre in Rampur in Uttar Pradesh (Jan. 2). That the terrorists succeed in attacking any chosen target at any time is something over which our police, intelligence agencies and political leadership should ponder. Terrorists should be put down with an iron hand, and that requires a law like POTA.

The government’s task does not end after paying compensation to the victims of terror attacks. No amount of compensation can bring back the dear ones of those who have lost their lives in Rampur, Kashmir or Hyderabad.

Duggaraju Srinivasa Rao,

Vijayawada

Attacks on CRPF and army camps are a clear indication of the fact that terrorists can target anybody at will, with impunity. Failure to contain terrorism effectively will pose a serious threat to vital installations and commercial establishments.

We need action-oriented plans to tackle terror, not empty rhetoric and false promises after every attack.

It is deeply distressing and lamentable that the attack on the CRPF centre which claimed eight lives on the New Year’s Day was the outcome of gross negligence. Had the warnings by the Intelligence Bureau and the army been taken seriously, the loss of lives could have been avoided and the terrorists repulsed. The blame game has already started between the Centre and the State government, with both holding each other responsible for the attack. But of what consequence is it?

To become wiser after an incident is routine. But is intelligence not all about being alert and alive to impending attacks?

The new year has begun on a bloody note with terrorists striking at the CRPF camp. They have once again posed a challenge to our ability to combat terrorism. All our efforts seem to be in vain, as terrorists always seem to gain an upper hand.

Even a CRPF camp is not safe from a terrorist attack. That the UPA dispensation at the Centre has given such a long rope to terrorists is a shame. It has scant regard for the safety and well-being of a large majority of people who are law-abiding.

V. Padmanabhan,

The terrorist attack is a reflection of the failure of our security system. The Centre and the State, instead of playing the blame game, should evolve a foolproof strategy to combat terrorism.

We should learn from the U.S. where there has been no major terrorist strike after 9/11. What terrorists need is an iron fist, not velvet gloves.

Md. Shad Jamal,

Puducherry
