Bengal Government sends proposal to Centre on PCPIR
Special Correspondent
Kolkata: The West Bengal government has sent to the Centre a proposal for setting up a petroleum, chemicals and petrochemicals investment region (PCPIR) in Nayachar Island near Haldia, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said.
Talking to reporters after a high-level meeting at the state secretariat, Mr. Bhattacharjee said that a new proposal has been sent to the Union Chemicals and Fertilizer Minister, substituting Nayachar as the proposed site for the PCPIR project instead of Nandigram.
“A lot of studies are needed and we have set up an expert group headed by Subir Raha, former chairman of ONGC,” he said.
The other members on this committee are academicians from IIT, Kharagpur, the Department of Oceonography Studies of the Jadavpur University as well as the pro-Vice Chancellor of the university.
Industry Minister Nirupam Sen said that the decision to set up such a committee was taken at the all-party meeting held with regard to this project.
