Mumbai police to probe molestation case

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: The Mumbai police are registering a suo motu case against New Year revellers, who molested two women outside a five-star hotel on Monday night, on the basis of photos published in a newspaper.

City Police Commissioner D.N. Jadhav told reporters that neither the victims nor their escorts filed a complaint but the police had decided to initiate a probe. A mob of about 70 men chased the women and their escorts as they emerged from a five-star hotel at 1.45 a.m. and were proceeding to the Juhu beach. The mob molested the women after overpowering their male friends.

A couple of photographers of the daily took pictures and alerted a traffic police officer, who chased away the mob and took the women to the Juhu police station. But no case was registered as the police were confused about the station’s jurisdiction.

Mr. Jadhav said: “Things can happen anywhere, anytime and we are investigating the matter seriously.”

He said it was not possible to post a policeman for every person. He urged the media not to blow the crime out of proportion.

Police sources said the two women and their companions were drunk.

We are pained: NCW

New Delhi Special Correspondent reports:

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has expressed anguish over the incident. “We are pained over the incident. When women are making a mark in every field, why should they not have a right to celebrate the New Year without feeling insecure,” NCW chairperson Girija Vyas told reporters here on Wednesday.

The All India Progressive Women’s Association has approached the NCW, the National Human Rights Commission and the Union Home Ministry seeking action against the accused.
