SINGAPORE: Malaysia’s Health Minister Chua Soi Lek on Wednesday resigned after admitting his involvement in a sex scandal that was beginning to embarrass the country’s government. Dr. Chua resigned as parliamentarian and also gave up his political position as Vice-President of the Malaysian Chinese Association, a key constituent of the ruling coalition. Led by the United Malays National Organisation, the coalition includes the Malaysian Indian Congress. Apologising to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and others, Dr. Chua, who announced his resignation at a press conference in Putrajaya, acknowledged his extramarital affair with a female friend. The scandal unfolded after a secretly filmed video did the rounds over the past several days. Dr. Chua said he did not want to be a burden on the government over a moral issue.
