Shooting
AHMEDABAD: Joydeep Karmakar fired the best ever Indian scores in 50m rifle prone event when the Railways shooter scored an impressive 598 out of 600 before clinching the gold medal with yet another national record, in the National shooting championship. Joydeep was two points better than junior Akash Kumar of NCC in the qualification rounds, before he came up with 102.7 in the final for a total of 700.7, to better the previous aggregate record held by Satgurudass (698), set in Bangalore in 2002. Joydeep jointly held the previous record of 595 with A.P. Subbiah (Auckland, 1999) and Gagan Narang (Milan, 2006, Kuwait 2007). “I wanted to make it to the Asian championship in Kuwait to try and get Olympic quota, but my scores were low and I couldn’t make it to the Indian team,” said Joydeep. “I’ll start preparing for the 2012 Olympics from now itself. This score will give me a big boost to do much better in the World meets,” he said. Akash Kumar was also equally good, shooting just one under-10 score of 9.7, in his second shot. His total of 698.6, after an impressive final round worth 102.6, earned him the silver medal. Army’s Devesh Panwar bagged the bronze with a total of 697.
