Collective failure

The collective failure of the batsmen led to India’s huge defeat in the Melbourne Test. Excuses like not enough time was available to acclimatise or for match practice cannot hold water considering the experienced Indian line-up. The top seven batsmen have together in Tests accumulated 37,000 runs and yet their combined effort did not take India even to 200 runs in either innings. This is sheer lack of application and commitment.

Early exit

As one who has been following Tamil Nadu’s fortunes in the Ranji Trophy championship since 1979, it saddened me to note the State’s early elimination this time. TNCA would do well if in future it did not organise matches in Chennai in November/December when rains can intervene and cost the team precious points as it did this time against Saurashtra and Rajasthan.

Lack of confidence

Team India seems to be facing a problem in Australia. Veterans like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, who should be setting examples to the youngsters, appear to be down on confidence. Our batsmen let us down in Melbourne. Can India bounce back at Sydney in the second Test?

Positive batting

Matthew Hayden played a terrific innings, being positive from the first ball at Melbourne. Players like Hayden relieve the pressure for the batsmen to follow and this is the secret of Aussies’ success. Our players ought to take a leaf out of the approach of these cricketers.

Hyderabad
