Public support to schools in Madurai crosses Rs.115 crore

MADURAI: Public contributions for improvement of Government schools in the district in the last 10 years has crossed Rs.115 crore.

To showcase the philanthropists’ support so far and to highlight other requirements, the Department of School Education is organising a ‘School Improvement Conference’ here on January 4 after a gap of 10 years. The last conference was held in 1997.

Talking to reporters on Wednesday, Chief Educational Officer R. Pandurangan said that many elementary schools, high schools and higher secondary schools benefited from the support extended by private individuals, parents, donors, well-wishers and companies.

While the total money value of the public support was Rs.115.28 crore as on Tuesday, he said that several important infrastructure and educational materials were procured for schools under Government network.

“Schools could get furniture, purified drinking water, classrooms, toilets and other amenities due to the generous contribution of the public,” Mr. Pandurangan said.

The CEO, however, said that there were still some schools in the district that were looking for public support and some did not get basic amenities even though the collection from philanthropists was good.

According to him, the objective of the department in organising the conference is to involve parents and public in the improvement of Government schools. Of the total Rs.115 crore received in the last 10 years, elementary schools got Rs.43.50 crore while high /higher secondary schools received nearly Rs.72 crore, he said. Mr. Pandurangan said that there were 1,482 schools in the district of which 1,254 were elementary and the remaining high/higher secondary schools.

The Government-run Power Grid Corporation has recently come forward to extend financial support to five schools in Usilampatti educational district. K. Natarajan, District Elementary Educational Officer, said that at the conference some of the items donated by public to the schools would be on display in 44 stalls.

Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu and Collector S. S. Jawahar will take part in the conference that will be held at St. Britto Higher Secondary School in Arapalayam.
